Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a common refractive error caused by an irregular curvature of the cornea or lens, which prevents light from focusing properly on the retina. This results in blurred or distorted vision at all distances. Astigmatism often occurs alongside other refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness).

The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye, and the lens is located behind the iris. In a perfectly shaped eye, both the cornea and lens have smooth, evenly curved surfaces. However, in an eye with astigmatism, the cornea or lens is curved more steeply in one direction than another, like a football rather than a basketball. This irregular shape causes light rays to focus on multiple points in the eye, leading to blurry or distorted vision.

Symptoms of astigmatism include blurred or distorted vision, eye strain, headaches, and difficulty seeing at night. These symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the astigmatism. Some people with mild astigmatism may not notice any vision problems, while others with more significant astigmatism may experience considerable visual disturbances.

Astigmatism is usually diagnosed during a comprehensive eye exam, which includes tests to measure the curvature of the cornea and the refraction of light within the eye. At Dr. Gurvinder Kaur’s clinic, we use advanced diagnostic tools to accurately assess the degree of astigmatism and determine the most effective treatment options.

Treatment for astigmatism typically involves corrective lenses, such as glasses or contact lenses, which compensate for the irregular curvature of the cornea or lens. Toric lenses are specially designed to correct astigmatism by providing different refractive powers in different meridians of the lens. For those seeking a more permanent solution, refractive surgery options like LASIK, PRK, or astigmatic keratotomy can reshape the cornea to correct the irregular curvature and improve vision.
