Colour Blindness
Colour blindness, also known as color vision deficiency, is a condition where a person is unable to distinguish certain colors or shades of colors. This condition is usually inherited and affects the way the cones in the retina (the part of the eye that senses light) respond to different wavelengths of light. The most common types of color blindness are red-green color blindness, which affects the ability to distinguish between red and green hues, and blue-yellow color blindness, which is less common and affects the ability to distinguish between blue and yellow hues.

Red-green color blindness is the most prevalent form and occurs more frequently in males than females. This is because the genes responsible for the most common forms of color blindness are located on the X chromosome, and males have only one X chromosome while females have two. Blue-yellow color blindness, also known as tritanopia, is rarer and affects both genders equally.

While color blindness is usually present from birth, it can also develop later in life due to diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or the use of certain medications. Color blindness can affect various aspects of daily life, including the ability to choose matching clothing, read traffic lights, and interpret color-coded information.

At Dr. Gurvinder Kaur’s clinic, we offer comprehensive color vision testing to diagnose color blindness. Although there is no cure for inherited color blindness, we can provide strategies and tools to help individuals cope with the condition. These may include using specially designed color-corrective lenses, which can enhance color perception for some people, and relying on technology and apps that help identify colors.

For individuals whose color blindness is caused by an underlying medical condition, treating the condition may improve color vision. Regular eye exams are crucial for detecting and managing such conditions early.
