Low Vision

Low vision is a term used to describe significant visual impairment that cannot be corrected with standard glasses, contact lenses, medication, or surgery. It includes various levels of vision loss, from mild impairment to near-total blindness. People with low vision often have difficulty performing everyday tasks such as reading, writing, recognizing faces, and navigating their environment, even with the use of corrective lenses.

The causes of low vision are diverse and can include age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, and other eye conditions. AMD is a leading cause of low vision in people over 50, affecting the macula and leading to central vision loss. Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, often leading to peripheral vision loss. Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the blood vessels in the retina, causing vision impairment. Retinitis pigmentosa is a genetic disorder that causes progressive loss of vision due to the degeneration of the retina.
